THE GRAND SCUTTLE ~ Dan Van Der Vat

One of the most remarkable events in naval history occurred on 21 June 1919 at Scapa Flow, Orkney. As a result of a misleading report in a British newspaper. The German High Seas Fleet was deliberately scuttled by its own commander. Although the Royal Navy guessed Rear Admiral Ludwig von Reuter's intention, they could do nothing to prevent him, and some of the finest ships ever built sank to their grave beneath the cold Orcadian waters.

This classic account, which has sold well over 10,000 copies to date, continues previously unused German archive material, eye-witness accounts and numerous contemporary photographs to place the Grand Scuttle in its hisorical context and recreate the awesome spectacle as it unfolded that extraordinalry midsummer day.
